First edition of the Smart City Expo Casablanca

The city of Casablanca hosted the 1st African edition of the Smart City Expo event, on May 18th and 19th 2016, under the theme: "Open city, inclusive and innovative." This event, held for the 1st time in Africa, stood out by its original concept consisting of a professional event “Smart City Expo Casablanca” and a general public event “Smart City Connect Casablanca”.

“Smart City Expo Casablanca”, initiated by “Casablanca Events and Animation”, in partnership with Oxford Business Group was able to bring together public administrations, economic actors, architects, urban planners, academics, and civil society to discuss, debate and share the most effective channels, in view of a deep and radical transformation of the city of Casablanca in order to make it a living ecosystem, including the latest innovations in urban connectivity.

For this first edition and in parallel with the professionals’ meeting, Smart City Connect Casablanca organised manifestations in various parts of the city aimed at the general public. The goal is to demystify the concept of smart city through several animations such as the Hackathon challenge, which included a number of developers with the aim of creating an application on the topic of mobility and urban transport.

The Ministry of Industry, Trade, Investment and Digital Economy has taken part in the plenary session “Collaborative cities and citizen involvement” through the presentation of Mr Boubker Badr, Director of Digital Economy, in which he introduced the achievements of the national e-government program , emphasising on the potential of new technologies and the commitment of citizens for the development of a smart society, as well as an exhibition area dedicated to e-gov projects open to the public during the two days of the event.
